Since 2012 I have worked as an independent journalist and writer, the emphasis being on independent. Mainstream journalism, including some of the finest media organisations that I have long admired and sometimes written for, increasingly seem to push partisan agendas at the cost of balanced, more nuanced reporting. This contributes to a self-regarding and illiberal consensus emerging in society that won’t tolerate dissenting voices offering honest and healthy scepticism regarding complex and important issues, and which goes against many of the values the defence of which originally inspired me to join the military.
